TCEA partners with Technology & Learning to present Tech Forum

TCEA provided support as an Association Partner to the Tech Forum conference, “Insight and Innovation for Technology Leaders,” on Nov. 2 in Round Rock. Tech Forum is one of several such events produced throughout the country by Technology & Learning magazine and the techLEARNING web site.

About 150 people attended the day-long conference, which included keynote speaker Wesley Fryer; breakout sessions on subjects ranging from Web 2.0 Practices and Web-Based Virtual Reality to Empowering and Protecting Tomorrow’s Digital Citizens; and mini-workshops on 21st Century Cartographers, Virtual Communities, and Technology Across the Curriculum.

Fryer is an educator, author, digital storyteller, and change agent whose blog, “Moving at the Speed of Creativity,” was selected as the 2006 “Best Learning Theory Blog” by eSchool News and Discovery Education. He was named an Apple Distinguished Educator in 2005. He also is an author who contributes to numerous publications, including TCEA’s magazine, TechEdge. He currently is Oklahoma Director of Education Advocacy for AT&T.

Other speakers included Joel Adkins, Campus Technology Coordinator at Westlake High School in Eanes ISD, who won the TCEA 2007 Instructional Technology Specialist award in February 2007; Miguel Guhlin, Director of Instructional Technology Services in San Antonio ISD, who is a frequent blogger and writer for the TechEdge; and Kari Rhame, Chief Technology Officer for Deer Park ISD, who is President-elect of TCEA.

Manor High School will host TCEA 2008 Robotics Contest

Manor High School will host the TCEA annual robotics competition on Saturday, Feb. 2, 2008. The competition will be held the Saturday before the TCEA annual convention rather than during the convention itself. The contest was traditionally held at the Austin Convention Center during the convention.

Manor High School has state-of-the-art technology and is close to Austin. The school is one of 15 Texas Science, Technology, Engineering and Math academies that opened this fall. It is part of a $71 million state initiative to create 35 academies, which will be funded by the Texas High School Project, a consortium of the state of Texas, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, and the Michael & Susan Dell Foundation. The school’s address is 12700 Gregg Manor Road in Manor, Texas.

TCEA robotics contest registration opened in October, and the deadline is Dec. 14, 2007.

Some general robotics contest rules to remember are:

  • Each student must submit a release form to TCEA PRIOR to competition.
  • Teams consist of four members only. No alternates are allowed.
  • Students may only be members of ONE team.
  • Registration is limited to one team per campus in the Arena and one team per campus in the Inventions competition. If space is available for an additional team from that campus, the sponsors will be notified via e-mail.

Be a correspondent for eSchool News at TCEA 2008

Those who are attending the Texas Computer Education Association convention in Austin,  (Feb. 4-8, 2008) can help fellow educators around the world by volunteering as an eSchool News “Conference Correspondent.” All correspondents have to do is send eSchool News informal reports during the conference, describing what takes place at the free sessions, or paid workshops and their analysis will be featured throughout the conference on the eSchool News Online web site. These reviews keep colleagues at home informed while giving the presenters valuable feedback.

Over the past year, hundreds of educators have joined the Conference Correspondents program — collaborating to file more than 500 detailed session reports from seven major conferences.

Just let eSchool News know if you would like to participate. Correspondents can set their own schedule, and they won’t be asked to write about any session or event that they would not otherwise have chosen to attend.

To join the hundreds that have already participated, please sign up at: http://www.eschoolnews.com/cic/tceareg2008.cfm . Or contact Jessica Weiss, the eSchool News Online Editor at: jweiss@eschoolnews.com.
