Teachers, Tune Your Engines in the Model Pit Stop!

See top mechanics (teachers) from across Texas “rev” students’ engines with the use of technology in a 21st century classroom. In these rooms, presenters assume the role of the teacher, providing instruction while the audience assumes the role of students or observers.

Wednesday, Feb. 4

11:00 a.m.–12:30 p.m.
Using Interactive Technologies in Language Arts
Roxanne Glazer, Distance Learning Coordinator, ESC Region 12 and Angela Conrad, Instructional Technologist, Humble ISD
Teachers will learn how interactive technologies can motivate students to develop ideas, elaborate on them, and present them to an audience.

1:00–2:30 p.m.
Geometric Architecture
Michael Mikkelson, Fourth Grade Teacher, Irving ISD
Participants will take their knowledge of geometric solids and apply them to the real world by making an architectural proposal to a fake company. The proposal that uses the best mixture of creativity, environmental planning, cost, and safety will be chosen. The lesson demonstrates how to apply geometry concepts to the real world in a cooperative learning environment.

iLearners in an eWorld
Mary Carole Strother, Library Media Specialist, McKinney ISD and Lisa Paine, Fifth Grade Science Language Arts Teacher, Finch Elementary
Learn how the use of video iPods can enhance instruction and impact student achievement. Each participant in the model classroom will have a hands-on experience using the video iPod with lessons in language arts, science, and math. Participants will review video playlists on the iPod and learn how the playlists help organize and individualize instruction for classroom use.

The Critter Factory

A Critter class will be examined and new Critters will be created, as part of the GridWorld case study.

10:00–11:30 a.m.
It's A Jungle Out There!
Bobbie Jo Wilheim, Elementary Teacher, Connally ISD and Debbie Reed, Elementary Teacher, Connally ISD
Students will learn how to research a topic and prepare a PowerPoint presentation. The chosen topic is Animals in the Rainforest. Using various media sources, students will complete the research, blog about their findings, and present a PowerPoint presentation in front of the class.

Virtual Worlds in Education and Libraries
Valerie Hill, Librarian and Dr. Kaye Bray, TWU
Explore the impact of virtual worlds and the potential for collaborative learning through virtual immersive learning environments.

2:00–3:30 p.m.
Using Google Earth to Drive Your Lessons to Victory Lane
Jim Holland, Instructional Technologist, and Susan Anderson, Instructional Technologist
Take advantage of Google Earth features such as feature-rich place mark designs, paths and overlays to explore, investigate, and interact with curriculum concepts to make learning relevant and exciting.
