ABSTRACT: Hawaii presents a unique opportunity for studying online learning. Most Pacific-rim students are unable to travel to the major university in Oahu to attend courses. The need for online learning is great, particularly at the graduate level. This study examined student experiences with completely online graduate courses taken at the University of Hawaii. The study analyzed student feedback to determine the strengths and challenges of these courses. Results indicated that online course design must address unique qualities of Pacific-rim students to be successful. Pacific-rim students need flexible, supportive, and interactive courses addressing their particular needs for learning in the Pacific-rim. Culture and infrastructure play significant roles in the learning experiences of Pacific-rim students. The study includes recommendations for designing courses and programs in these environments.
