Let’s explore some AI-powered tools that help teachers develop effective formative assessments:

What Is Formative Assessment?

Formative assessment is an ongoing way for teachers to check student understanding of what’s being taught. It gives the teacher information about how students are doing while they are still learning new material. Formative assessments can help identify concepts students are struggling with so teachers can adjust instruction, review, and reteach if needed. Examples of formative assessment include questioning during class discussions, quick writing or drawing assignments to show what they learned, practice quizzes, exit tickets, and more.

Six Tools for Creating Formative Assessments

1. ChatGPT

You can always ask ChatGPT or your favorite AI chatbot to create a formative assessment. An example prompt you could use is, “Generate a list of [number] formative assessment ideas related to [insert topic] for my [grade level and subject] students.” Just replace each bracket with the information for each prompt. You can also ask ChatGPT to align your formative assessments with specific learning objectives. In addition, differentiate your formative assessments by asking ChatGPT to give you five assessment ideas using a variety of modalities like exit tickets, quizzes, graphic organizers, etc.  

2. Conker

Conker is an AI tool that permits teachers to generate formative assessments in the form of multiple choice, mixed, read & respond, or fill-in-the-blank questions.

Conker lets you create fast quizzes and formative assessments that can be differentiated by question type, grade level, and more. It will also allow you to copy/paste reading material to generate quizzes. All you have to do is open Conker and provide details about the quiz you want to create. Conker will then create a short formative assessment you can assign to students with a code or export it to Google Forms. You can even create a printable question sheet and answer sheet. There is a limited free plan, and teacher registration is required.

3. Magic School AI

MagicSchool is an AI with many tools available to teachers. Explore everything from lesson plan generation to formative assessment creation.

Magic School AI offers several tools and features that can be valuable for creating and implementing formative assessments in your classroom. This tool allows you to quickly build multiple-choice quizzes tailored to specific topics or standards. You can customize difficulty levels, question types, and answer keys to assess students’ base knowledge and readiness for new learning. In addition, you can generate quick reflection prompts or questions to collect student understanding at the end of a lesson. Then, you can quickly analyze the responses to identify areas for further clarification or address common misconceptions before moving on. There are both free and paid versions of the program. 4. QuestionWell

QuestionWell is an AI that provides teachers the chance to input topic, choose question type, and generate questions from text, YourTube, URL, uploaded documents, or imported questions.

QuestionWell generates questions so teachers can focus on what matters. Start by identifying the topic, content, and grade level. If you have text you want your formative assessment based on, you can provide it, but it isn’t necessary. Then, the AI will write questions. In the free version of QuestionWell, you can create a multiple-choice quiz with 20 questions. Once the questions are generated, select which ones you want to include in the quiz. Then, you can export the questions to tools like Google Forms, Kahoot, Canvas, Microsoft Word, and more.

5. Quiz Wizard

Quiz Wizard is an AI tool that lets teachers create formative assessments from topics, documents, texts, links, or audio/video.

Quiz Wizard is an AI-powered tool that generates multiple-choice questions and flashcards that can be used for formative assessments within seconds. The process is straightforward and involves you entering the topic of your choice into the tool, and Quiz Wizard takes care of the rest by generating unique questions and answers. The content can be exported to other platforms, like Microsoft Word.

6. Quizizz AI

Quizziz AI offers searchable quizzes by topic and provides the opportunity to create your own formative assessments.

Quizizz AI is an artificial intelligence-powered tool that can generate multiple-choice questions with four answer options. The tool can also automatically determine the appropriate number of questions to generate for a formative assessment from the content provided. You can create a quiz by uploading a document, entering text, or pasting a link to a webpage. Quizizz AI offers free and paid premium versions.

Is Learning Sweeter with Educandy?

Ready to make learning sweeter? Give a newcomer in the game-based formative assessment toolkit a try. Educandy makes it easy to create (or adapt from those created by the community) and share digital quizzes. In this blog entry, you will see some of its features in actions. A short video step by step also appears at the end of the blog.

Before we jump into Educandy, let’s revisit relevant strategies that work.

Strategies That Work

You may already know of several relevant, high-effect-size instructional strategies. Each supports the use of quiz tools like Educandy, Kahoot, Blooket, and Quizziz. Let’s do a quick review of four relevant strategies that may apply when using these types of tools. (As a reminder, an effect size of 0.4 or higher means that the particular instructional strategy will give one full year of growth or more when used with students. An effect size of 0.8 will give two years, and an effect size of 1.2 will give three years of growth.)

  • Mnemonics (d=0.80). Mnemonic instruction works for students with learning problems. That includes those students with learning disabilities. The Visible Learning Meta X database defines mnemonics as “a practice by which students learn a significant amount of information for long-term recall by memory.” You can see the connection between rehearsal and mnemonics, right? Both are aiming for long-term recall.
  • Rehearsal (d=0.73).One fun strategy that you may have relied on before is that of rehearsal. With such a high effect size, it’s important to know that it’s more than memorization. Some consider elaborative rehearsal as  the preferred method. This approach better connects short-term learning to long-term memory by linking new information you want to learn to what you already know. Many of us have relied on the rehearsal strategy, elaborative in particular. Consider when you’ve created an image in your head or relied on a list or mnemonic.
  • Spaced vs Massed Practice (d=0.65). This powerful strategy has us space out over time the intervals when we study information. This ensures that significant learning occurs. Combined with retrieval practice, you can make long-term memory connections for new information.
  • Retrieval Practice (d=0.46). Also known as “practice testing,” this involves frequent testing. The research is in and it’s positive about “the testing effect.” Flashcards, practice problems, and writing prompts can improve learning. Learn more here.

Even when you make a mistake, Educandy gives you a hint as you can see above. I missed the “o” at the end of piccolo, a musical instrument, and it prompted me with two question marks.

You can create a free account. The process involves entering your email address (no single sign-on or OAUTH authentication yet). You then receive an email message with a link and can set your password. On the privacy side of things, only the teacher is putting their email at risk. The games offered result in a shared link that’s viewable by anyone. This means that you may not know which student is doing what, which is fine for low-risk retrieval practice. It might be more fun to get students to design their own quizzes.

Pricing and First Impressions

You can visit the Educandy website and start creating right away. Here is my quick walkthrough (six to seven minutes) of Educandy.

Educandy lacks a few of the features that its competitors offer for free. The lack of Google/Microsoft account authentication is problematic. Worse, the website and the app have elements the other lacks. If the elements are there, they may be so well-hidden as to be inaccessible. For example, premium features and pricing are available only through the app. The cost of Educandy is approximately $24 a year. Educandy does offer the ability to import tab-delimited content, but it’s not obvious.

The short version? This web and device specific app need more work. I’ll keep my eye on it for the future. No doubt, they will be making Educandy even sweeter as time goes by. For now, the candy wrapper isn’t quite ready to come off unless you have simple tastes.

Test-Enhanced Learning Made Simple with Knowt

The research is clear: rereading a text doesn’t work as well as taking a test over the material. Known as retrieval practice, it involves students studying a passage of text. Then, students take a low-stakes test about it. In this blog entry, we’ll explore a tool that empowers students to make their own tests.

The Testing Effect

“Retrieval practice” involves frequent testing or quizzing. Students take practice tests over a period of time. This pushes them to recall material from memory. In time, this assists students with remembering the material. Research shows that students recall more information from practice testing than rereading.

Practice testing has an effect size of .46. The Visible Learning Meta X database describes it in this way:

Practice testing is a well-established strategy for improving student learning. The aim of practice testing is to support long-term retention. It is also to increase access to retrieving the “to-be-remembered” information. Sometimes called retrieval practice, practice testing, or test-enhanced learning.

Let’s take a look at some research. These results compare studying versus practice testing as a way to increase retention:

  • Studying
    • Need information retained for a short time? Study it.
    • Studying over fewer, longer sessions is less effective than its alternative. The alternative is spacing out the intervals of study over a longer period of time. This is called Spaced vs massed practice and enjoys an effect size of .65.
  • Practice Testing
    • Need long-term retention of information? Use practice testing.
    • Testing has a greater impact than repeated study when done over time.
    • Testing after reading improves students’ ability to answer questions. That includes questions that are “in the text” and “in the head.”
    • Testing done once a day after covering material increased retention
    • Students tested often had increased retention.
    • It doesn’t matter what form the questions take. Students gain the benefit of practice testing regardless of question type. All questions were as effective as the others at enhancing the students’ learning. Question types include:
      • multiple-choice,
      • short-answer, and
      • hybrid questions

You can deepen the impact of practice testing if students receive feedback. Delayed feedback yields better results. That’s no surprise since feedback has an effect size of .64 itself.

What’s convenient about practice testing is teachers or students can create the test. The question is, what’s the best way to do that?

Reviewing High-Effect Size Strategies

Before we jump into the technology side of this, notice that there may be a happy confluence. The confluence is of high-effect size strategies that include the following:

It’s easy to see how these powerful strategies speed growth in a year and a half in a school year. Ok, now that’s out of the way, let’s review some technology tools.

Ways to Create Practice Tests

Although teachers can make a practice test, there’s a benefit to students making it. No doubt, teachers are making tests using various tools that support quizzing.

Student-Created Quizzes

As a high school student, I stumbled upon a technique that I wish someone had told me about earlier. That is, how to read a selection of text then select content that might appear on a test. At the time, I did not create a test. I highlighted, wrote down or summarized critical test information. It was only later that I would reformulate my notes into test questions. This technique was quite effective in history classes, which I made straight “As” in.

Students can now use a free service to turn their notes into practice quizzes. Students can use an online notebook, or import their notes. The imported notes can be in Google Docs, or Word format. Once imported, the student click a button and their notes get turned into a quiz.

Meet Knowt: Get to Know Your Notes

Students can take their online notes, click a button, and a quiz appears. Knowt features fill in the blank, multiple choice or short answer questions. Recall that question type doesn’t matter for practice testing. Instead, it’s the repetition on a daily basis to allow for spaced practice (.65 effect size).

For fun, I asked Knowt to import a tough Google Doc. The Google Doc? Matching High-Effect Size Instructional Strategies and Digital Tools. It created a twenty-five question quiz out of the content.

Here’s the first question:

In case you’re wondering, the answer is C. Performance. How did Knowt do this? Knowt describes their process in this way:

First, we take your notes and analyze them using machine learning. On our server, the A.I. determines the best question formats for each sentence. Once it knows the best questions, the algorithm sends it to the web or mobile app for you to take a quiz. It only takes seconds. At the end, you get great quizzes that are custom made from your notes that you can take anywhere you go.

In this 25-question quiz that I created from complicated content, the questions made sense and worked. Here’s what my notes looked like in Knowt:

Fiction vs Non-Fiction

For fun, I decided to drop one of my favorite stories into Knowt. The story? Frank Stockton’s The Lady or the Tiger (online).  One of my favorite teachers, Fr Richard O’Shaughnessy, introduced it to my classmates and I. Like everyone else, we agonized over the ending.

Knowt turned the story into another 25-question quiz. Some of the questions were not reasonable, but if you have to know it cold, Knowt works great.

Gamifying Learning with Quizizz

Researchers from the Pew Research Center have found that gamifying learning stimulates interest and deep engagement with content.  Two tools that facilitate this include Kahoot! and the relative newcomer, Quizizz.

Quizizz allows you to create multi-player quizzes that work on almost any device. What’s more, you can access others’ assessments that can be completed in class or assigned as homework. With your free account, you can export the results as well. Teachers create their account and publish the link to the Quizizz. Then students, working at their own pace, complete the quiz using any Internet-connected mobile device. The more quickly they respond, the more points they gain.

Quizizz has more customizable features than Kahoot!,  including the ability to mix up the order of the questions and the answers for each student, the ability to show the correct answer after each question, and the ability to display a Quiz Review at the end that shows all questions. In addition, the teacher can turn off the timer and choose to show a Leaderboard (for greater gamification).

Quizizz enlivens the quiz with music and silly “correct” or “incorrect” images drawn from popular media. As the teacher, once the quiz is over, you can access data and analyze reports. The raw results can be exported, as shown in the screenshot below, to Excel format:

If a Quizizz is assigned as homework, the teacher can set a deadline for completion of up to 15 days from the start. Students can then complete the quiz at home. Some teachers are allowing their students to take the quiz over again repeatedly to raise their score (and learn the content even more!).

You can also integrate Quizizz with Google Classroom! Some of the features of Google Classroom integration include the following: 1) Quizizz reports will show the actual names of your students; 2) Student safety is enhanced since they are logging in with their Google accounts; and 3) Facilitate assignment tracking since completion reports are available in Google Classroom.

A new feature recently added to Quizizz is internationalization. If you click on the American flag in the upper right corner, you can change from English to Spanish. More languages will be coming soon.

Three ways to take Quizizz to the next level:

  1. Use the tool to facilitate “College Bowl” competition that pits teams against each other.

  2. Have students design quiz content for each other to highlight key content ideas and topics.

  3. Take a team-based approach to quizzes that works like this: Have students take the test and discuss what they got right or wrong. Then have them take the quiz as a group. This facilitates higher-order thinking and focus teams on the subject material.
